Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar grows along the mist-drenched North Pacific Coast. The wood is straight and even grained, light in weight with minimal shrinkage. It is one of the most decay resistant species in America.

For centuries Western Red Cedar has been used for the most modest of dwellings from the coastal Indians to settlers' cabins and later to stately mansions and commercial buildings. Cedar logs, cedar paneling and shakes helped build North America and have graced the exteriors and interiors of countless thousands of homes.

The continuing popularity of Western Red Cedar is due to its long lasting striking beauty, durability, and affordable price. Because of its extremely low maintenance characteristics, Western Red Cedar is the ideal choice from a vacation cottage to any luxury home.

Known worldwide for high resistance to decay, Western Red Cedar contains a natural resin that repels moths, insects, termites, carpenter ants and bees and ambrosia beetles.

Cypress (Yellow Cedar)

Cypress (also known as Yellow or Alaska Cedar) is globally unique, found throughout the Pacific region of Western North American. It grows as a dominant (but more commonly scattered) species in a variety of ecosystems of the wetter areas of coastal British Columbia.

Frequently a high altitude, colder climate species, as a rule it has the slow growth rates conducive to even texture, strength and natural durability. Of greatest importance is the fact that Yellow Cedar, with its nootkatin and chamic acid content 'built in', has a natural fungicide and insecticide, resistant to rot and beetle infestation and need not be chemically treated. This makes it an ideal material for the log home industry with particular advantage in tropical or sub-tropical climates, especially in those jurisdictions where the uses of synthetic preservatives are banned.

It is an excellent material in house construction, with very good machining properties, popular as exposed beams. Its rich yellow colour and pleasant aroma add to the attractive interior decoration of a home.
